10 Lessons Learned After 25 Years in Business
These ten lessons have nothing to do with hiring/firing, marketing or creating systems. They are more about the challenges you will inevitably face and how you respond to them.
Think Long-Term
Business is a rollercoaster ride, with constant fluctuations in sales, momentum and morale. It’s easy to get caught up in the short-term ups and downs, but the most successful entrepreneurs take a long-term view.
Consistency is key—doing the right things day in and day out, even when the results aren’t immediately apparent. Stay focused on your long-term vision, and don’t get derailed by temporary setbacks.
Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
In the age of social media, it’s all too easy to get caught up in comparing ourselves to others. We see the highlight reels of our competitors and feel inadequate in comparison. But the truth is, you have no idea what’s really going on behind the scenes, and the people you are comparing yourself to are the top 0.001 percent of what they do.
Stop measuring your progress against anyone else’s. The only person you should be competing with is the version of yourself from 12 months ago. Focus on your own unique journey and be the best version of yourself.
“Comparison is the killer of happiness and joy” – Dale Beaumont
Embrace the Tough Times
No matter how successful you become, tough times are inevitable in business. Sales will dip, projects will fail and you’ll question everything. But these challenges are actually gifts in disguise.
They force you to get creative, fix what’s broken and come back stronger than ever. Reframe your mindset—instead of seeing a crisis as a tragedy, view it as an opportunity for growth and improvement.
Understand the Pendulum Effect
Just as the tough times will come, the good times will also return. The pendulum of business (and life) is always swinging. But when you’re riding high, don’t get complacent—prepare for the inevitable downturn. And when you’re in the depths of despair, remember that the pendulum will swing back in your favour. Stay patient and keep pushing forward, because the good times are on their way.
Prioritise Your Relationships
Your business will only be as strong as the relationships that support it. Make time to nurture your most important personal connections, whether it’s your spouse, family or closest friends. These people will be your rock when times get tough. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and be willing to forgive and compromise. Strong relationships take work, but they’re worth the investment.
Take Care of Your Health
As an entrepreneur, it’s easy to let your health slide as you pour your heart and soul into your business. But neglecting your physical and mental wellbeing will ultimately undermine your success. Make exercise, nutrition, and self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine. Your future self (and your business) will thank you.
“If you don’t find time for exercise, you’ll have to find time for illness.” – Dale Beaumont
Keep Dreaming and Setting Goals
Entrepreneurship can be a grind, but it’s the dreams and goals that keep us motivated and moving forward. Maintain a vision for the future, and break it down into actionable steps.
Celebrate the small wins along the way, and use that momentum to fuel your next big leap. Your goals don’t have to be massive – even small, incremental progress can make a huge difference.
Make It About More Than Just You
While it’s important to pursue your own dreams and ambitions, true fulfillment often comes from helping others. Look for ways to give back, whether it’s through charitable work, mentoring, or using your business as a force for good. Shifting the focus outward can reignite your passion and provide a sense of purpose beyond just personal gain.
Ask for Help (It’s a Gift, Not a Burden)
As entrepreneurs, we often have a tendency to tough it out on our own. But the truth is, your struggles are someone else’s opportunity to make a difference and feel good about themselves. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, put your pride aside and ask for help. The people in your life want to support you, and by allowing them to do so, you’re actually giving them a gift.
Just Keep Going
Consistent good is 1000 times better than the occasional great. No matter what obstacles arise, the most important thing is to keep going, and if you do enough of the right things over a long period of time, you will win.
You don’t have to be a big shot! Just a little shot that keeps going. It takes ten years to build a business empire.
However, with this being said, you have to give yourself ‘pit stops’ and look after other areas of your life so you don’t burn out, hit the wall and stop enjoying the journey.
A Final Lesson
When you run a business, it’s okay to have a bad day and wonder if you can do this anymore. It’s also ok to have an entire week when you don’t feel so good about your work. When this happens, give yourself a break and find time to do something you enjoy.
What’s not ok is having a bad month or realising your bad feelings have been around for weeks on end. When this happens, you need to put your hand up, ask for help and talk to someone.
The more you can surround yourself with positive, likeminded business people who are learning the same lessons as you, the easier you will find it to stay on top.
