As we step into 2026, there’s a simple yet powerful exercise that can dramatically shape the year ahead: creating a One Page Strategic Plan.
This is a practical tool designed to bring clarity, alignment, and focus to your business, no matter what size you are or stage you are at.
Business Blueprint Founder Dale Beaumont follows this practice each year, reminding business owners that simplicity is often the secret to success. As he says, “The main thing is to keep the main thing, the main thing.”
It’s a timely reminder that in business, focus isn’t a luxury, it’s essential.
Take a look at excerpts from Dale’s 2026 presentation on how to create a one page strategic plan for your business.
Why You Need a One Page Strategic Plan
Business owners often feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of tasks competing for attention. When everything seems important, nothing gets done properly. A One Page Strategic Plan strips away the noise and helps you concentrate on what truly matters. This plan fixes that by helping you decide what is most deserving of your energy in 2026.
The process is straightforward. It doesn’t require fancy tools or software. You can even sketch it out on the back of a serviette!
What matters is not the format, but the intention and clarity behind it.
The Three-Part Framework
The One Page Strategic Plan is broken into three essential components:
1. Why – Your Driving Motivation
At the top of the page sits your why. This is your driving force for the year; your purpose, your motivator, your fuel.
It might be a bold mission like transforming an industry, or something deeply personal, like paying off a mortgage or taking the family on a long-awaited holiday. The only rule here is honesty. What’s truly pushing you forward this year?
You might even consider having two versions of your plan: one for yourself and one to share with your team, giving them a broader purpose to rally behind.
2. What – Your Three Big Goals
Under your why come the three major outcomes you want to achieve in 2026. These should be clear, measurable and achievable, so you will look back in December and be able to see your progress.
Consider Jack Welch, the former CEO of General Electric, who led a multi-billion-dollar company with over 60,000 staff by focusing the entire organisation on just three goals. If that’s enough for a global corporation, it’s more than enough for your business.
This isn’t about the 100 tasks on your to-do list. It’s about the three most important outcomes. When you define these, everything else starts to fall into place.
3. How – Your Action Steps
Beneath each of the three goals, outline the how. These are the three main strategies or actions you’ll take to achieve each outcome. Think of them as the 20% of actions that will deliver 80% of the results. This is where focus turns into traction.
Avoid getting lost in the weeds. Stay high level, but specific. For example, if one of your goals is to grow your customer base, your how might include launching a referral program, investing in paid ads and improving your onboarding process.
At each meeting, you can look at your action steps and hold people accountable for taking them.
When to Use Your One Page Strategic Plan
This tool isn’t just for the start of the year. Any time you’re feeling scattered or unsure, pull out a sheet of paper and run through the process again. Clarity is the antidote to anxiety, and this plan brings everything back into focus.
Whether you’re leading a team or going it alone, this document becomes your compass. Every decision, opportunity, and distraction should be held up against it. If it doesn’t align with one of your three goals, it’s probably not the best use of your time.
As Dale put it, “Every day, ask yourself: which of these three things am I working on today? If it’s none of them, then why are you doing it?”
Share and Align with Your Team
Once you’ve completed your plan, don’t let it collect dust. Share it with your team. Talk about it often. Put it on the wall. Refer to it in meetings. Keep it alive throughout the year.
Be relentless in your communication. As Dale explains, “People forget. People get distracted. New team members come in. It’s your job to keep everyone aligned.” This plan isn’t a one-off exercise. It becomes the lens through which you lead your business.
Set Yourself Up For a Smarter, Simpler 2026
Business success doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from doing the right things – and doing them well. The One Page Strategic Plan gives you the structure to make smarter decisions, cut through the noise, and stay focused on what really matters.
