When you start a business, you automatically become a leader — whether you feel ready or not. At first, you’re often wearing all the hats, juggling sales, delivery, admin and everything in between. But as your business grows, so does the need to rely on others. And that’s where many business owners hit a ceiling.
If you want to scale, leadership becomes one of your most important responsibilities. Your success is no longer determined by how good you are at your own job, but by how well you can bring out the best in others.
At the July 2025 Business Blueprint Conference, attendees heard from Scott Stein, author of Leadership Hacks, a book focused on real-world tools for growing and leading teams. As Scott explained:
“You can have the best systems in the world, the best AI in the world, but if you can’t connect with your people, nothing’s going to work.”
What followed was a fast-paced, story-driven presentation packed with relatable examples and five practical leadership strategies you can apply straight away.
Here are the key takeaways on how to lift your leadership overnight:

1. Live Your Vision
Scott shared a story about Peter Hanenberger, the former CEO of Holden, who once shocked a room by arriving in a Ford. When asked why, he explained that the best way to understand the competition is by experiencing it himself.
Great leaders live their vision. They lead by example, not just instruction. If you want your team to care about the business, growth or values, they need to see you embodying those things day-to-day.
2. Share Your Mistakes
Too often, business owners feel they need to be perfect, but by being open about your mistakes, you create a culture where it’s safe to learn, improve, and ask for help. Sharing your own experiences, especially the ones that didn’t go to plan, builds trust and removes the pressure for your team to get everything right the first time.
This is particularly valuable when onboarding new staff or working with younger team members. Scott suggested asking team members how they prefer to receive feedback when something goes wrong. It’s a simple shift that can significantly improve communication and outcomes.
3. Clarify Expectations
Many business owners assume their team knows what’s expected of them, but assumptions often lead to frustration. Scott recommends a practical exercise where you map out a team member’s responsibilities on one page.
Start by asking them to list what they’ve done in the past week, then break it into categories and estimate the percentage of time spent on each. This becomes a visual way to spot misalignments between what they’re doing vs what you need.
This process also helps distinguish between working in the business (day-to-day tasks) and on the business (strategic thinking), and it provides a clear structure for development conversations and performance reviews.
4. Delegate With Structure
As a leader, you need to delegate in a way that sets people up for success. According to Scott, there are four levels of delegation, ranging from full independence to closely supported delivery. Rather than jumping between extremes, the goal is to gradually move people up the levels as they gain experience and confidence.
A useful delegation tip is to start by mapping out the task together. Ask questions to understand how your team member would approach it, then guide them through the process.
Agree on check-in points before the deadline so there’s room to course-correct without micromanaging. This saves you from constantly jumping back in to fix things, and it empowers your team to take ownership.
5. Show Interest
The final point was a reminder not to overlook the human side of leadership. In the rush of running a business, it’s easy to treat team members purely in terms of output. But when leaders genuinely take interest in their people, their goals, lives and motivations, it makes a difference. A staff member working overtime to save for their first home is likely to work even harder if they know you care.
Great leadership doesn’t require massive change and you don’t have to be an expert from day one. It starts with small, deliberate actions that show you’re invested in your team’s growth as much as your own.
