Like your logo, your business slogan or tagline is one of the most important parts of your marketing. It can also be one of the hardest parts to get right.

There are so many clever slogans out there, it is funny to think that behind every one there may be hours of work.

If you don’t know where to get started, take a look at the following tips and inspiration.

The Elements Of A Great Slogan

One of the most crucial considerations in creating a great is that yours is easy to remember. More often than not, the taglines we find amusing and witty are lines we can recall. They stick with us because they stand out.

Your slogan has to be short. You’ll notice you never read a slogan that is three sentences long! The challenge is to find a way to convey your message in just a few words.

Furthermore, successful brands understand that for a tagline to work, it is important to sell the lifestyle or the benefits. A popular example is Nike’s “Just do it”. If you’ve lived under a rock and you hear their tagline for the first time, you might not automatically think of running shoes. But because Nike has associated their famed one-liner to confidence and pursuing your passions, customers find the tagline relatable and inspiring.

How To Come Up With A Business Slogan

There is no right way to create a slogan. You can start with brainstorming with whoever you have available in your team. Brainy friends and inventive family members may also come in handy for that ‘a-ha’, perfect slogan moment.

If you wear too many hats in your business and have no time to spare, you can always approach advertising agencies or freelancers from fiverr.com to assist you. Once you have a few different options for your slogan, create a survey and have friends or a commercial focus group vote on the one they like.

A slogan is a powerful thing. It may be short but it is worth the time invested to get it right.

    Great Business Slogans

Here are some fun and creative slogans to get you inspired:

“Life’s better in boardshorts” is a memorable one-liner by Australia’s very own Billabong. The concept is simple, the language easy to understand and the slogan paints a picture of that aspirational, beachside lifestyle.

Another well-known slogan is KFC’s “Finger Lickin Good”. Does it make you crave fried chicken? This slogan creates an instant memory of devouring those tasty herbs and spices.

L’Oreal has a slogan which is “Because You’re Worth It” which is very powerful. The tagline is brilliantly uplifting and provides a subtle ego-boost.

What these slogans have in common is that they don’t hard sell their products. Instead, they emphasise what the buyer feels after making the purchase.

This is what I mean by selling the lifestyle. Paint a picture your audience will want to be a part of with your slogan and help them understand the experience your product provides.

    Slogan Creating Shortcuts

If you’re in the mood to experiment, there are websites that help you generate slogans on the spot. www.slogangenerator.org is a basic example. You can type any keyword you’d like included in your tagline and it automatically suggests slogans for you.

Let’s pretend I run a flower shop. A few on-the-spot answers I got were: “The go-to flower people”, “Only the finest flowers”, and “Raising the bar for excellent flowers”. These won’t exactly set the world on fire but what they can do is trigger your creativity and help you come up with something perfectly suited to your business.

Another online shortcut I could use is to search for ‘florist slogans’ online. By seeing what others have done (e.g. “More than words”, “We take flowers personally”), I can find the inspiration for a tagline of my own. Of course, it is important not to steal other people’s ideas!
