Do you feel like you are spending more on marketing every year but getting less from it?
Many business owners fall into the trap of believing that better targeting or a bigger advertising budget will solve everything. They post and hope, copy their competitors or send traffic to a generic offer. Leads become more expensive, and the business struggles to explain why it deserves to be chosen at all.
The truth is much simpler. The problem is rarely the number of eyeballs you reach. People want to know who is behind a business and whether that business has helped someone in a situation like their own. You can buy attention. You cannot force trust.
At the July 2026 Business Blueprint conference, personal branding and marketing expert Matt Purcell explained how business owners can combine a recognisable identity with smarter creative, customer proof and faster follow-up to generate qualified leads.
The principles below cost very little to apply and can change how your marketing performs from your very next campaign.
Here’s how to generate trust by refining your personal brand:
1. Start With Identity, Not Imitation
Matt’s first lesson is to clarify who you are. Without this, every platform, trend or competitor will pull the business in a different direction.
A personal brand should come from lived experience rather than a manufactured online persona. That is what makes copying other people so dangerous.
If you use similar colours, formats and messages to your competitors, you will remind the audience of the category leader while making your own business harder to remember.
2. Set Yourself Apart
Your story and your proof are the only assets your competitors cannot reproduce:
- Your story is the set of problems you have solved and the lessons you have learnt along the way.
- Your proof shows that your approach produces results for real customers.
Use both to answer the question every prospect is quietly asking. Why should I choose you? Explain who you serve, the situations you understand, the outcomes you have created and why your method suits that particular buyer.
Think of it this way:
“Marketing is asking the girl on the date. Branding is why she says yes.”
Marketing creates the opportunity. Branding gives the prospect a reason to respond.
3. Let Your Creative Do the Targeting
Modern advertising platforms rely heavily on behaviour. Instead of producing a broad advertisement and hoping the targeting settings find your customer, create content that lets the right person recognise themselves immediately.
Matt shared an advertisement about how an injury could take a tradie off the tools for months. Non-tradies were unlikely to engage, while relevant prospects selected themselves by clicking. The platform will then go and find similar responders.
Specificity may reduce the number of people interested in an ad, but it improves the relevance of every response you get. Aim to reach the right people, not simply the most people.
4. Build a Best Client Blueprint
Avoid inventing a fictional customer profile in a workshop. Study the clients who already deliver the greatest lifetime value, stay the longest and refer others to you. Your strongest future clients are likely to share patterns with your best current ones.
For each of your top clients, identify:
- Their life stage
- What triggered the purchase
- Why have they stayed with you?
- What they tried before you
- The words they use to describe your business
Interview them directly, or review their messages and testimonials. Their language will shape your ads, landing pages and sales conversations far more effectively than any internal jargon.
5. Make the Customer the Hero
Position your customer as the hero and yourself as the experienced guide. A single interview can become a podcast, a short video, a carousel, a quote graphic, a case study, a reaction clip or a paid advertisement. Don’t forget to add clear text labels to your video so viewers can decide quickly whether the content is relevant to them.
The goal is not to look impressive. It is to show a prospect a person like them who had a recognisable problem and achieved a result with your help. That is the proof that turns visibility into trust.
6. Follow up FAST
Good-looking ads generate interest, but slow follow-up wastes it. Review who receives your enquiries, how soon they respond and what actually happens when the first call is missed.
A growing personal brand is not separate from your sales process. Identity attracts attention, proof builds confidence, specific creative generates qualified enquiries and disciplined follow-up converts them.
Does Your Personal Brand Make You the Obvious Choice?
When implemented well, personal branding acts as a practical growth system, and it works when every part of it is pulling in the same direction.
To put this into practice, follow these six steps:
- Define who you are (and stick to it).
- Lead with the story and the proof of your work that competitors cannot copy.
- Create ads with images and wording specific enough that the right person recognises themselves.
- Build your client profile from your best existing customers.
- Turn real customer results into content that makes the client the hero.
- Answer every enquiry fast.
You cannot force anyone to trust you. What you can do is make it obvious who you are, who you help and what happens when they say yes. Do that consistently and the choice stops being a comparison of prices and starts being a decision about people.
