10 Lessons in 10 Years of Starting, Growing & Selling a Business

Omar Zenhom, Founder of WebinarNinja and Host of The $100 MBA podcast, delivered a compelling session at the April 2025 Business Blueprint conference, sharing the lessons he learned over a decade of building a tech company from scratch.

From the early days of bootstrapping to reaching over 30,000 users and eventually selling the business, Omar’s journey is full of insights that are both practical and personal. Take a look at the ten lessons he learned building, growing, and eventually selling his ‘baby’, WebinarNinja.

In less than ten minutes, you’ll identify the biggest troublespots in your business so you can take back control.

Here are the ten most valuable takeaways from Omar’s session:

    1. Make It Personal

The most successful businesses are fuelled by something deeper than profit. For Omar, the mission behind WebinarNinja stemmed from watching his parents struggle financially after immigrating to the US from Egypt. “They never could get ahead with money,” he shared. “I never want anybody to feel that way again.”

He encouraged business owners to find their compulsion—something that drives them so strongly, they feel they must succeed. “Don’t confuse desire with compulsion,” he said. “You need compulsion in business.”

    2. Embrace Constraints

WebinarNinja started small—just 30 team members globally—while their competitors employed thousands. But that constraint became their strength. “We were nimble,” Omar explained. “We could build and improve our product fast, responding to customer feedback in weeks—not quarters.”

Instead of being overwhelmed by limited resources, use your agility as a competitive edge.

    3. Hire Slowly, Fire Quickly

Omar admitted to losing over half a million dollars from one poor hiring decision. “Whatever you do in business, do not rush hiring,” he warned. More importantly, he stressed the value of owning the outcome. “If you hire them, you must fire them. You’ve got to feel the pain so you don’t repeat the mistake.”

Hiring well is about protecting the integrity and future of your business.

    4. Evolve or Get Crushed

No matter how strong your product is today, it won’t be enough tomorrow. “My product or service doesn’t matter,” Omar said bluntly. “The customers have choices. They shop around. They’re informed.”

WebinarNinja started with live webinars, then expanded into paid webinars, then automated webinars—all because customers demanded it.

The message: stay flexible, or fall behind.

    5. No One Does It Alone

Business isn’t a solo sport. Whether it’s a strong team, partnerships, or mentors, growth requires connection. “You’re only as good as the people you surround yourself with,” Omar explained. He urged attendees to spend time with those a few steps ahead to learn what challenges lie ahead—and how to prepare.

If your growth feels stalled, change your circle.

    6. Cash Flow Is Oxygen

Omar didn’t mince words on this one. “If you don’t know what your profit margin is right now in your head, you’re asking for trouble.” He views financial clarity as essential, not optional. He tracks his profit and loss daily and believes cash flow should never be outsourced.

“Money is everything in business,” he said.

If you don’t have a profit and loss sheet, you need one—today.

    7. Choose Your Sacrifices

“You can have it all—just not all at once,” Omar told the audience. In the early years, he and his partner Nicole decided to focus on three things: the business, their health, and their family. Everything else had to wait.

It’s better to choose what you sacrifice than to let life choose for you. And when others are affected, communicate clearly to get their support.

    8. Know When to Let Go

Selling a business is rarely a simple decision. For Omar, it came down to one hard truth: “I realised I had taken it as far as I could.” Recognising the limits of his own skill set wasn’t failure—it was maturity. By stepping aside, he made space for the business to reach new heights under new leadership.

    9. You Are Not Your Business

After selling WebinarNinja, Omar experienced a shift in identity. “I was the webinar guy for a decade—and then I wasn’t.” But in letting go, he found something better: clarity about the person he’d become in the process.

“The best gift was who I became,” he said. “The challenges, the late nights, the lessons—that’s what I took with me.”

    10. Every Day in Business Is a Gift

Omar closed with a message that resonated deeply with the Business Blueprint audience. “If you are transacting, if you are selling, if you have customers, you are winning.” Most people never try. But those who do—those who build—are already living the dream.

Referencing Shoe Dog by Phil Knight, he shared a line that summed it up: “The cowards never started. The weak died along the way. That leaves us.”
